The guest speaker was my son’s teacher’s father, an almost 90 yr old who was a Marine in the Pacific in WWII. The kids also performed a song for the vets.
All told, the ceremony was very nice and the veterans wer invited to a reception with cake and punch afterwards. Despite my son having to leave to go to the bathroom midway through the program, it went off without a hitch. Hopefully more schools will follow their lead and honor veterans in the future.
Other ways to honor and help veterans abound. Kids can collect donations or money to send goody bags to active military, and adults can volunteer through their local VA hospitals. Then veterans can be honored year round and not just on Veterans Day.
